Montana State University School of Art invites the public to a visiting artist lecture by Los Angeles-based artist Karl Haendel. This lecture will take place in Cheever Hall, Room 215, on Monday, January 30, 6:30 – 7:30PM, and is free and open to the public.

Haendel owns and individualizes the world of popular culture by re-drawing it in his own vision–-cleverly manipulating scale, composition, and juxtaposition to uncannily transform ordinary images into witty perspectives on contemporary life.

Haendel focuses on black-and-white drawing installations. He recently had a solo show, “Questions for My Father,” a film installation, made with Petter Ringbom, at the Harris Lieberman Gallery in New York. His public art project, “Scribble,” was installed on the side of a building at 441 Broadway in New York in 2009. His works are in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He graduated magna cum laude from Brown, and received a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles.

The Bozeman Library Foundation invites the public to the Art Opening Reception for the Camera Club of Bozeman on Friday, February 3, 5:30-7pm with appetizers and drinks. The Club will have 28 photographers exhibiting pieces throughout the month in the Library’s Atrium Gallery. Proceeds of every sale will be divided between the Foundation and the Club, both local non-profits promoting education of the arts in our community.

The Camera Club of Bozeman has been in existence since the late 1940s, surrounded by year-round activities, special events, and some of the most photogenic places in the world. It has monthly meetings with a variety of how-to workshops, field trips, friendly/constructive photo critiques, pro-photographer presentations, and even spontaneous coffee shop get-togethers between meetings. All levels of photographic experience and expertise are welcome to participate. Some members use point-and-shoot cameras, others are honing their skills with DSLRs, and some diehards still shoot film. Photographers in the area are encouraged to join in and share the fun of photography with the members – meetings are typically held every fourth Thursday at the Willson School, 404 West Main, Board Room 120, 7:00 PM.

Exhibiting amateur photographers are: Anne Danahy, Bob Potter, Cheryl Taylor, Robert Howell, Deb Berglund, Dennis Young, Howard Bethel, Ken Shelly, Kristine Brandstetteer, Mary Armstrong, Matt Williams, Pam Linn, Pat Devine, Rob Potter, Sarah Phillips, Stephen Scott, Scottie Scott, Sid Brosten, Tamera Frank, Tiffany Feisthamel, Tom Eggemeyer, Linda Stuber, Patty Bauchman, Ed Thomes, Steve Culliton, Shelburn Murray, Laura Rotherham, and Steve Hample.

Every summer, the winter snow of the Montana mountains melts, and gradually flows toward the ocean. This year, artists Charlie Capp and LA Hoffman will be embarking on an creative art adventure to follow that water. They will be traveling by kayak from Capp’s family ranch in Stevensville, MT, and follow the course of the rivers all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The project is called “Summit to Sea”, and will be a 1,101 mile journey through four states, and a portion of Canada. Along the route they’ll document the communities linked by the water, from the creeks of Montana, to where the Columbia river finally mingles with the sea.

“We’re not just going to be exploring the rivers of the American West,” said Capp. “We want to see how the rivers, and a precious resource like water, have affected and shaped the communities that share it.” Before they hit the river this summer, though, their first mission is fundraising, and they’re using a very 21st-century strategy to do it.

“We’re utilizing Kickstarter to raise funds for the project,” said Hoffman, “a relatively new, web-based strategy for getting art projects funded by a crowd of users, rather than relying on large grants, which are becoming increasingly rare.” Capp and Hoffman are trying to raise $8,500 by midnight on February 29th, and so far the Kickstarter campaign is working, though they haven’t quite reached their fundraising goal yet.

“It’s a really scary process,” said Hoffman. “You really put yourself out there, and hope that others will find your project interesting, and each time you see a backer choose to support your project, you breathe a little sigh of relief, because someone else out there believes in it too.”

The process can be nerve-wracking for artists because they’ll only receive pledged funds from Kickstarter if the campaign is successful. “It’s literally all-or-nothing,” said Hoffman. “On the one hand, our project’s backers know that their contribution will only be used for successful projects, but for an artist, it’s a little hard to know that you’ll lose any funding that doesn’t reach your goal.”

Capp and Hoffman, like most Kickstarter artists, also incentivize browsers of the site to become backers by offering rewards. In Capp and Hoffman’s case, these rewards can be as simple as a screen-printed postcard, or as complex as a bundle of art that includes a copy of the travel journal they’ll be publishing when their trek is completed.

“We really want to encourage everyone we can to back the project,” said Capp. “Whether they simply believe in the spirit of the project, or they want to get some of our artwork as a reward, we want to have as many people hear about the idea as we can.”

More information about the Summit to Sea project can be at Capp’s website: www.lens-capp.com, or at Hoffman’s site: www.loriehoffman.com. Their Kickstarter campaign can be found at www.kickstarter.com/projects/lahoffman/summit-to-sea.

The Flying C Café will feature 14 Love Stories, a series of drawings by Marla Goodman this February. Goodman, a Bozeman publication designer, used her collection of vernacular photographs as inspiration for the series.

“Vernacular photography is just a fancy way to say ‘other people’s old snapshots,’” explained Goodman. “I just love to look at old photos of people, especially people who seem to have a bond of some kind. I can sit for hours plunked down with a box of old photos studying people’s postures, their expressions, their clothing, their surroundings and piecing together my own story for each photo.”

For this series, Goodman represented each vintage black and white photo in vibrant oil color on 16×20” canvas panels. The pairs of people might be sweethearts or married couples, relatives or just close friends. What brought them together–and why this moment was captured–is left to the viewer.

“I tried to be true to the photos even when it went against my good sense,” said Goodman, “because I think the unexpected compositions and the odd surprises you notice in snapshots are part of what makes them interesting to look at.”

Goodman’s 14 Love Stories drawings will be on display at the Flying C, upstairs at the Community Food Co-op at 908 W. Main in Bozeman from Feb. 1 – Feb. 28. The Flying C is open Mon.-Sat. 7am-7pm and Sun. 8am-7pm. Additional drawings and Goodman’s notes about the development of the series are published at goodwerks.wordpress.com.

The museum quality gallery boasts 108 feet of wall hanging space and large floor areas for sculpture. One exhibiting artist described it as “. . . arguably the finest gallery space in the area.”

Exhibits rotate approximately every four months, and are selected by the Zoot Committee for the Arts (ZCA). Application materials deadline is February 17, 2012 COB.

When Zoot founder and CEO Chris Nelson planned Zoot’s new headquarters building he required an unusual design element: space for a dedicated, first-rate art gallery. “Art spurs creativity in the work place and we wanted to have that environment here. It’s also important to provide local artists with a venue to display their works.” says Nelson.

All work sold through the gallery is commission-free. Underwriting is provided for artists’ opening receptions.

Public hours are 9 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. For further information and to download the application materials visit the Zoot art gallery website at www.zootartgallery.com or contact Darcy Barry, the gallery coordinator, at dbarry@zootweb.com

Montana State University School of Art invites the public to a visiting artist lecture by Los Angeles-based artist Karl Haendel. This lecture will take place in Cheever Hall, Room 215, at 7pm, January 30, and is free and open to the public.

Haendel owns and individualizes the world of popular culture by re-drawing it in his own vision – cleverly manipulating scale, composition, and juxtaposition to uncannily transform ordinary images into witty perspectives on contemporary life.
